CARS CARTED AWAY, DRASTIC -TRAFFIC RULES. Shock to New York Motorists. Amid scenes of holiday enthusiasm New York’s drastic new traffic plan was put into effect, and was voted by officials to be an unqualified success. In a large area comprising the whole theatrical district traffic was rigidly controlled at the rush hours of the evening on which the rules were, first put into effect. Parking and all right and left turns were prohibited, and embargo was laid on commercial vehicles, and taxicabs were not allowed to enter the zone without passengers. The officials said the movement of cars was speeded up at least 50 per cent, and to the observer the claim seemed reasonable.
Many thousands of persons lined the sidewalks, and cheered or booed the activities of several hundred special policemen who tried to teach the new rules to motorists who had not read the newspapers for months, and were outraged to find that they must continue threequarters or a nule in a direction they did not wish to go. Others were even more indignant when, having left their cars parked for a few minutes, they returned to find that the police had picked them up with derricks on lorries and carted them away.
