Stock Sales.
MATAMATA. There was a good yarding of cattle at the Matamata sale on Wednesday, conducted by Dalgety and Company, and prices for beef were a shade higher than of late. Dairy
cattle in milk, or springing, were not in keen demand, it being too early in the season. There was a fair yarding of store pigs and a small yarding of fats. The prices for both showed an advance on recent rates. There were no sheep yarded. Prices were:— Cattle. — Fat cows, £6 7s Gd to £9 12s 6d. Fat heifers, £7 5s to £9 10s. F.c. cows, £4 15s to £5 17s 6d. Store cows, £3 to £4 2s 6d. Jersey heifer calves, £3 15s to £4 6s. Ayrshire heifer calves, £4 10s. Bulls, £3 10s to £7 15s. Ayrshire heifers, £8 10s. Dairy cows in milk, £6 10s to £7 15s. Pigs.— Best baconers, £3 12s to £4. Medium baconers, £2 16s to £3 Bs. Porkers, £2 to £2 9s. Porkers, light, £1 11s to £1 17s. Stores, best, 14s to £1 Is. Slips, 8s to 12s. Weaners, 4s to 9s. MORRINSVILLE. There was a smaller yarding of all classes of stock than usual at Dalgety and Company’s sale at Morrinsville on Thursday but most of the cattle yarded changed hands at satisfactory rates. Prices were:— Cattle.— Fresh-conditioned cows, £4 10s to £5 ss. Old s,tore cows, £2 11s to £4. Jersey heifers, r.w.b., inferior quality, £5 7s 6d. Jersey heifers in milk, £7. Cows in milk to £ll 10s. Cows, springers, £lO 10s to £ll. Heifer calves, £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d. Pigs.— Light porkers, 23s to 255. Stores, light, 20s 6d. Slips, 9a 6d to 11s. 1 Weaners, 2s to ss.
TIRAU. At the Farmers' Auctioneering Co.’s Tirau sale only a small yarding came forward, which met with keen competition. Prices were:— Pigs.—Slips, 14s to 18s; weaners, 4s to 6s. Sheep.—Aged ewes, 25s 6d. Cattle.—Medium fat cows, £7 16s to £8 19s; prime young cows and heifers, £7 to £7 10s; light fat cows, £6 to £6 15s; fresh conditioned store cows, £3 15s to £4 10s; boner cows, 32s to 50s; Jersey and Jersey cross heifer calves, small, £2 10s to £3; potting bulls, £2 to £4.
WAIHOU. At the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company’s Waihou sale on Friday a medium yarding of store lambs came forward, and a heavy yarding of pigs and beef and store cattle was also penned. The pigs were in advance of »late rates, while beef showed a slight hardening. Quota- . tions:— Sheep.— Woolly m.s. lambs, 19s to 19s 4d. Early shorn m.s. lambs, 15s 7d to 17s 6d. Small m.s. lambs, shorn, 13s lOd to 14s. Cattle. — Prime medium fat heifers, £8 11s to £lO. Light fat heifers, £7 to £7 10s. Prime heavy cows, £lO 2s to £lO 10s. Heavy fat cows, £8 10s to £9 17s 6d. Medium fat cows, £7 2s 6d to £B. Light fat cows, £6 7s 6d to £6 19s. Pl-iin end unfinished sorts, £5 14s to £6. Fresh-conditioned store cows, £4 10s to £5 ss. Poorer-conditioned, £3 to £3 17s 6d. Good-quality 18-months S.H. steers to £6 18s. Well-grown yearling steers to £5. Steer calves £2 2s 6d to £3. Well - bred Jersey heifer marked calves made £5. Jersey and Jersey - cross heifer calves, best £3 to £3 10s, smaller sorts £2 12s to £2 18s. Potting bulls, heavy £6 to £9 ss, lighter £3 15s to £5 ss. Pigs.— 1 Heavy baconers, £3 14s to £3 18s. Medium baconers, £3 7s to £3 10s. Light baconers, £2 18s to £3 3s. Heavy porkers, £2 10s to £2 15s. medium £2 to £2 ss, light 30s to 355. Slips, 15s to 18s. Weaners, 6s to 11s. HAMILTON. At the Farmers’ Auctioneering Co.’s Frankton sale on Tuesday there was a fair §ntry of beef cattle which sold firm at late rates. A full entry of fat and store sheep was
submitted, fats being slightly easier, while breeding ewes and store lambs were in good demand. Fat pigs were penned above average numbers and sold firm at advanced rates. All classes of stores sold at the late low values.
Beef.—Medium to prime heavy steers, £l3 15s to £l4 7s sd; well done light steers, 610 10s to £lO 12s 6d, light and unfinished £9 to £9 7s 6d; prime heavy cows, £ll to £ll 15s, heavy £9 7s 6d to £lO 4s, medium weights £7 15s to £8 10s; light young cows and heifers, £6 4s to £6 15s, rough and plain £5 5s to £6; store to forward cows, £4 to £4 7s 6d; other stores, £3 5s to £3 13s; Jersey and Jersey-cross weaner heifers, £3 5s to £3 13s.
Sheep.—Best fat wethers, 34s to 34s sd; heavy fat ewes, 26s 9d to 28s 9d; prime lambs, 295; 2-tooth wethers, in good store condition, 29s Id; fair framed forward conditioned ewes, 21s; fair woolly ewe lambs, 23s 6d; wether lambs, woolly 19s fid: medium mixed sex B.F. lambs, 16s 2d to 18s; fair W.F. mixed shorn 15s Id; 5-year-old ewes, r.w.r., 27s , 6d to 28s 2d; F.M. ewes, running with rams, 23s 4d to 25s 9d. Pigs.—Prime heavy baconers, S 3 16s to £4; medium baconers, £3 9s to £3 14s; light baconers, £3 Is to £3 7s; heavy porkers, £2 10s to £2 15s; light and medium porkers, 34s to £2 4s; stores, 27s to 30s; slips, 16s 6d; weaners, 4s to 10s 6d. WEEKLY PRICES OF FAT STOCK FOR EXPORT. _ The New Zealand Meat Producers Board advises that the following prices are being offered for fat stock for export at April 8, 1929: Canterbury.—Prime woolly lambs, 361 b and under 9ld, 371 b to 421 b Bid, 431 b and over 8d ; second-quality lambs, Bid. Southland. Prime woolly lambs, 361 b and under 93d, 371 b to 421 b 81d, 431 b and over 73d ; second-quality lambs. 361 b and under 8!d, over 361 b 7id.
RETAIL PRICES OF NEW ZEALAND MEAT IN LONDON.
The New Zealand Meat Producers Board has been advised by its London manager that the following retail prices are being quoted for New Zealand lamb and mutton retailed in London on April 5, 1929; New Zealand lamb (per pound).— Legs 15d, shoulders 14d, loins 13d, necks Bd, breasts sd. New Zealand Mutton, Wether (per pound).—Legs lid, shoulders 10d,. loins lOd, necks 7d, breasts 4d.
