MEANING OF PEDIGREE.
A pedigree is simply the history of an animal for several generations. The mere fact that bull has a pedigree is not sufficient. There are too many inferior animals with pedigrees most o* which should never have been retained as bulls. Nor is the pedigree of a bull which shows only an occasional record of satisfactory production to be accepted. Uniformity of production is desired in a ped gree, and great care must be exercised that misleading or “padded” pedigrees are accepted. It is always advisable to keep a bull long enough so that the quality of his daughters shall become known, and if they are better than their dams tot continue to use him to the fullest extent. Irreparable loss has resulted from sending bulls to slaughter before their heifers have been tested. The best bulls, those which actually improve the breed, are none too plentiful, and too much emphasis canamong farmers themselves, that is to knowing how to select them, and of maintaining them in use for the longest possible time when once they have proved themselves.
