Hinuera.
Burglary. To attend a silver wedding celebration and return at 1.30 a.m. to find her house ransacked, was the unenviable experience of Mrs. F. M. Wade on Saturday night. Every drawer and cupboard in the house had been systematically searched and the contents left strewn about the room, while the desk in the dining room had been interfered with and her private papers littered the floor. containing about eighteen shillings,, a keepsake sovereign and two half-sovereigns, her wedding and engagement rings, a locket and chain, a gold watch, brooches, and a silver trinket box and a pair of silk stockings purchased on Saturday, had all been removed. The case is in the hands of the Matamata police.
The thief evidently worked hurriedly yet without fear of interruption, because practically every corner of the house was disturbed. Sunday School Picnic.
On Saturday the annual Methodist Sunday school picnic was held on Mr. R. Hawke’s farm. A most enjoyable day was spent by young and old, no pains being spired by the Sunday school teachers to make the day successful by considering the comfort of everyone. A. most thoughtful act was the conveyance of Mr. Higgins, of Matamata, to the picnic grounds. This gentleman has always been a keen church worker, but owing to an attack of partial paralysis has been confined to his bed. His many friends were pleased to see him, and look forward with him to his speedy recovery.
The school is more or less undenominational, as it is the only one in this district, which is deeply indebted to the men and women who give their time to this work. The Rev. Gardner-Brown presented a book to each child and toys to the winners of the races. Special prizes were presented to Miss Florence Settle and Miss Jean Frampton and Meryl Hawke won the prize for the best attendance. A splendid luncheon and afternoon tea were served. Football Meeting. A general meeting of the Hinuera R.F.C. was held in the hall on Wednesday, Mr. P. Cotter, president of the club, being in the chair. Proceedings were enthusiastic and it was decided to enter a junior team in the Matamata competition. The election of officers resulted as follows : President, Mr. P. Cotter ; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Settle, T. Corry, E. Corrin and Clements ; management committee, Messrs. A. Hawke, D. Kennell, N. Pryce and G. Reisterer ; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. Kennedy ; selectors, Messrs. C. Scelly and W. Sweetman ; auditor, Mr. W. Settle., The meeting decided to make a gift of £5 5s to assist the Hinuera school boys.
It was reported that the ground trouble had now been overcome through the generosity of Messrs. Brown and White, who have allowed the club to select a suitable area alongside the railway station. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £25 3s, and the question of a donation towards the union’s training shed was deferred till another meeting. The strong feeling which was in evidence among footballers as a result of what was considered unfair treatment by the Matamata Rugby Union has now abated and all members are working with a wall to make the junior team a strong and successful unit. The strong financial position of the club is largely due to the energetic efforts of the ladies, who worked extremely hard for the club during the past year and whose efforts are very much appreciated.
