MAMAKU BUSH ROAD.
A NATIONAL CONCERN. The move by the Matamata County Council to get the Mamaku Bush deviation gazetted as a first-class road has aroused considerable opposition in Rotorua. At Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council the Rotorua ißatepayers’ Association wrote expressing regret and surprise at the action of the county council in declaring the portion of the main highway which passes through the county as a fifth class road. Many nembers of the executive of the association who had the opportunity of inspecting the road were of the opinion that it differed in no way in mode of construction to the portion on the Rotorua side which is classed as fourth-class and is standing up to the work quite well. In view of the fact that the residents of Rotorua had voluntarily contributed £IOOO toward the metalling, it claimed that they had a perfect right to ask for a reasonable use of it. This it considered could be met by having the road declared fourth-class and the association asked the council to accede to this request, contending that to do so vould not be detrimental to the road. Cr. Judd suggested that the council reply that the road was not standing up to the traffic as was stated, and that the classification had been done on the advice of the council’s exnerts. Cr. Cox remarked that the classification was also done with the concurrence cf the Highways Roard. The general opinion of councillo-s was that'it was not purely council money that was being protected, but national money, as the road in question was a main highway. The clerk was instructed to reply on these lines.
