The New Zealand Railways Magazine continues to maintain the high standard set by the first issue. The March number contains many interesting articles, pleasingly illustrated. In these days of criticism of railway administration it is interesting to note the remarks of Mr. H. H. Sterling, the general manager, as rer ported in the March issue. Speaking at the dinner to celebrate the electrification of the Lyttelton tunnel, Mr. Sterling said that the standard of demand on the part of the public can be developed overnight, but the ability to supply the demand cannot be adjusted so easily. He went on to show that there were certain services •which the railways performed which •were community services and were not capable of being put down on the ■department’s balance-sheet as a direct asset. The railways can only pay as a community investment. Mr. Sterling instanced the workers’ weekly “tickets as a case in point, stating that they were ouite unremunerative, but no one would advocate their abolition.
