SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Putaruru School Committee met on Tuesday evening, there being present : Messrs. F. C. Barnett (chairman), J. W. Barr Brown, J. Gawith, F. C. Flyger, W. P. Benton, H. J. W. Scott and Rev. H. Ashworth (secretary).

Welcome to Headmaster.

The chairman extended a welcome to the newly-appointed headmaster, Mr. Hutton, and in doing so expressed the hope that he was not disappointed with the place and that he would have a long and pleasant stay in their midst.

Mr. Hutton thanked the committee for their kindly welcome, but as to i the length of his stay here it was a matter for the department, for they required teachers to move on in order to secure promotion. He congratulated the committee on their enterprise in securing the establishment of the high school with such a satisfactory roll number. The secretary said that he had written to the Auckland Education Board requesting that furniture (table, chairs, etc.) for the high school room be sent. The board had sent desks for the pupils but had forgotten the teacher. No reply had been received to the above request. The headmaster said that the board had notified him that a hall in the school building is to be converted into a science room for the high school. A further communication from the board was in reference to a dressmaking instructress, and the matter of finding a suitable person was left in the hands of the secretary and headmaster. High School. Mr. Hutton brought up the question of the attendance at the high school. Since the school opened at the beginning of the present year the average attendance has been 33.8, which entitled them to an assistant, who was badly needed, as the whole of the work fell on Mr. Marshall. Unfortunately there was no senior course available and this prevented several from attending. Members of the committee promised to get ir. touch with several parents who had children wM were advanced enough for this course. Appreciative Votes. This being the last meeting of the committee prior to the annual meeting of householders, the secretary moved a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman for the capable manner in which he had discharged his duties. They were fortunate in having such an excellent chairman. The motion was carried by acclamation. Mr. Barnett, in returning thanks, said that the secretary of a committee was the backbone, for he had all the hard work to do. In thanking the committee for their support the chairman said that they had carried out the good work foi the school in harmony. A vote of thanks to the secretary moved by the chairman was carried by hearty applause.
