VICTIM OF ILL-HEALTH.
POSTMASTER FOUND SHOT. Service at Tirau. The postmaster at Manurewa, Mr. Allen Roy Jones, was found dead with two bullet wounds in his head, in an outhouse of the post office, early on Monday marring. Deceased was \yell known in the Tirau district, having had charge of the local post office for some eighteen months, before being promoted to Manurewa. When found the body was cold, life having been extinct for some hours. A rifle was found by the body, a. loop of string being attached to the trigger and to the dead man’s foot. Mr. Jones, who was 41 years of age, and unmarried, had been in tbe civil service for about 28 years. He entered the service at Nelson in 1901. one of his associates being Mr. B. Macfarlane, now postmaster at Putaruru. In turn Mr. Jones served at Reefton, Wellington, Taihape and Wanganui, receiving his first sole charge in 1923, when he was appointed to Manganui. From there he went to Tirau and then to Manurewa, which office he was due to leave at any time on promotion to Auckland East (Shortland street), of which he was to take charge. Mr. B. Macfarlane, of Putaruru, was to follow him to Manurewa. Those who knew him well state that Mr. Jones was of most cheerful disposition, having a repututioiyas a wag, and his untimely end is attributed to ill-health caused through war service. Deceased was a most popular and efficient postmaster, having passed through all branches of the service.
