The first annual tournament organised by the Okoroire Springs Bowl ing Club was concluded last weekend, when the Matamata and Putaxuru teams met in the final. The tournament has proved a big success, and drew entries from no less than seven different clubs, and is bound to create further interest next year, owing to 4jte ; . pleasant sport provided this season. The final tie created much interest, and owing to the fact that the Putatutu team had beaten the Matamata team in section play by 18—9, there ■was much speculation as to the result. Stewart’s team, however, played in rare style and at no stage did Hollard’s rink look like winning. The teams were:— Matamata.—Green, Brunton, Oates, ..Stewart (s). Putaruru.—Yandle, Francis, Leggatt and Hollard (s). The green was fairly keen and true and on the first head both leads found the kitty, but Brunton lay with a toucher. Stewart added a second, and with Hollard failing to alter Matamata gained two points. Matamata lay four up when the skips played on the second head. Stewart attempted to block and failed. and Hollard drew shot. Putaruru lay three up at the third, hut the sides were open and Stewart trailed with last shot to lie 5 . The fourth was a very good head, but on a measure Matamata gained 3. At the fifth head Matamata added a further 2. Stewart missed badly at the sixth, P.nd Hollard added 2 to good shots by Francis and Leggatt. Good shots by Leggatt and Hollard added two more at the 7th head, and the score read 12—7 for Matamata. The eighth head saw the Putaruru team go to pieces though a good effort to trail by Leggatt just missed. Stewart collected all S points. The ninth saw kitty completely encircled, Hollard scoring on a measure. The tenth'and eleventh saw Putaruru gain three points, but Metadata increased by three on the 12th and 13th. At the 14th Hollard killed kitty for 3, hut from this point on Matamata held command. Stewart coming to light in fine stole when wanted. Hollard on one owftsion hod hard luck in missing a trail for 5 by a fraction. Final score: Matamata 34, Putaruru

This may be so, hut not if the bowls are cared for. There was a set on the Papanui green belonging to Stevens, new o f Oamaru, made by Taylor, of Glasgow, 56 years ago, that were as tine as on the day they were made. There are bowls in the Christchurch dub that have been in use for over 40 years. A little raw linseed oil after each game not only preserves the howls, hut gives them a nice feel in the hand. Vaseline and polish give them a nice appearance, but do not preserve. Many of the bowls which during the past few seasons failed to pass the test, owed the failure absolutely to vaseline —and cost the owner 6s each to have them rectified.
