THE VALUE OF MANURE.

WHAT IT ACCOMPLISHED. In tiie Te Poi District. On Friday, from a high point on the Okauia road, Mr. J. Pohlen took the opportunity to point out the Te Poi settlement to Hon. G. W. Forbes, Minister of Lands, as an illustration of what the use of fertilisers had accomplished for the light soils in the Upper Waikato district. Mr. Pohlen stated that a block of land approximately 7000 acres in extent, and generally known as the Scottish Widows Investment Block, was regarded over 20 years ago as being practically worthless and could have been bought for about five shillings per acre. The soil was of very light texture and numerous self-sown pine trees sprang up on it. With the introduction of fertilisers this area was found to be extremely productive and now there was a solid settlement which had its own cooperative cheese factory. The land was exactly similar to much of that at Putaruru.
