LOCAL AND GENERAL.
At a meeting of ratepayers of the Putaruru riding of the Matamata county it was decided to ask Mr. A. T. Morris, of Overdale, to stand for the riding at the forthcoming election. Mr. Morris decided to, accede to the request. } Rev. W. A. Burley, M.A., of Thames, was . the preacher at the Tokoroa Methodist Church harvest festival on Sunday afternoon. There a creuiraoie display of produce, tastefully arranged. Mrs. Ashworth gave a solo. At the meeting of the Putaruru Ratepayers’ Association on Friday evening it was decided, on the motion of the president, Mr. J. W. Barr Brown, to place on record appreciation of the services of Mr. J. S. Reid for his work in connection with the compilation of the rules.
An appeal for new members was made by the president, Mr. J. W. Barr Brown, at the meeting of the Putaruru Ratepayers’ Association on Friday night. Mr. Barr Brown said there was a certain amount of expense involved in getting the association on a sound footing.
The secretary of the Putaruru branch of tne New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr. Nicklin, was instructed by the monthly meeting of the union on Saturday to convey the branch’s congratulations to Mr. J. R. O. Lochhead on his recent examination successes and on his admittance to the bar. Mr. I.ochhead is the treasurer of the Putaruru branch of the union.
The Putaruru branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at its monthly meeting on Saturday decided to forward a letter of appre--io-Hnn to Mr. G. G. Griffiths, the retiring president, who has left the district. ror the excellent services rendered to the farming community by that gentleman. Various speakers paid hio-h tributes to Mr. Griffiths and best wishes for his success in his new sphere were expressed.
During the visit of the Minister of Lands and Agriculture to Toko'•nn on Thursday a settler informed Mr. G. W. Forbes that a farmer had a few years ago sold his prooerty in the district, and after trying out farms in Australia and New Zealand he returned to Tokoroa, where he had recently purchased a holding, convinced that it was equal to anything he had seen in his travels.
An enrolment ceremony of sever new members of the Putaruru branch of the Girl Guides took place on Saturday afternoon. The function took place, at the residence of Mrs. Flvger so as to enable her daughter, who is 'aid aside by sickness, to be enrolled. The enrolment was carried out by the company captain. Mrs. Dodson Mrs. Flyger hospitably entertained 'hose present to afternoon tea. Mrs. Bryant, Mrs. Flyger’s mother, was also present.
