PATCHING LINOLEUM.
When one wishes to renew a worn spot in linoleum cut out a piece in the centre of which the hole is located, carefully following lines of the design on the fabric. Using this worn piece as a pattern, lay it on the piece to be used as a patch in such a manner as to duplicate the design as far as possible, then cut it to the exact size and shape.
Cut a piece of strong muslin larger than the hole left in the floor covering and push it under the hole so it lies smooth and projects a few inches under the linoleum all the way around the opening. Apply glue to the under side of the linoleum over the muslin and press down upon them to glue the two together. Then apply glue to all edges of the patch, and on its under side, and slip it into the hole, which it should exactly fit. Wipe off any surplus glue and place, a weight over the patch. Leave it over night. For such mending it is best to use linoleum that has had about the same amount of wear as the floor covering. It may be taken from some inconspicuous place where new material can be substituted without attracting attention. By the use of old linoleum the patch will be much less noticeable than it would be if new fabric were employed. Sometimes what was originally left from the kitchen, for example, may be put down in a closet and the small piece on that floor removed for patches elsewhere. Often one can pick up remnants of linoleum for very low prices.
