WRONGFUL CONVERSION.
MAN GETS THREE MONTHS. Not deterred by previous brushes with the police, Fredrick Emanuel Simmiss converted a motor car to his own use on Sunday. He was arrested the following morning and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
The story as told to Messrs. J. W. Barr Brown and T. F. Snell, J.’sP., was that the accused met the owner of the motor car in Rotorua on the Saturday. The pair were together most of the day, and at night the motor was parked in a garage. Early the next morning the accused obtained possession of the car by stating that it belonged to him.
The accused became ill during the trip towards Auckland and stopped at a house with a request that one of the men drive him. His actions were suspicious and the accused was driven to the Putaruru police station. He was an old offender and was immediately arrested. The accused pleaded not guilty, but was convicted and sentenced. He was not represented by counsel.
