Hinuera.

Queen Carnival. A most enjoyable dance was held recently for. Miss Florence Settle, the gold queen, who is representing the produce stall which is in the capable hands of Mrs. N. Griffiths. Assisting this lady with the supper arrangements were Mesdames Hollis and Kennedy. ,■ Consequently everything was perfectly organised. Most delightful music was provided by Mr. Dug. Melsaac’s panatrope, with pianoforte accompaniment by Mr. Fleming, the whole effect being equal to that of a first-class orchestra. The cake for the weight guessing competition was won by Mr. W. Settle. Despite the fact that numbers were still on holiday, there was a crowded attendance and the attentive M.C. and the good floor ensured that all thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

On Saturday afternoon the Queen Carnival Committee, consisting of Mesdames Wheeler and Maud, who have charge of the fancy stall, held a gift afternoon on the croquet lawn for their queen, Miss Hazel Wheeler. A most delightful afternoon tea was served in the pavilion. Competitions were held and with a number of visitors from the Matamata Croquet Club quite a delightful afternoon was spent. The cake was won by Miss Bessie Kernot, vegetables by Mrs. Phil Hawke and the croquet competition by Mrs. Maud. Many useful and pretty gifts were received for the stall, and it is hoped that while the weather is so beautiful more of these open-air functions will be held. School Committee. A meeting of the School Committee was held in order to make preliminary arrangements for the annual school picnic. Messrs. Scelley (chairman), S. Clarke (secretary), J. Hearns and the head teacher were present, apologies for absence being received from Messrs. F. Germann and P. Hawke. It was decided to hold the picnic on Friday, February 22, in the same grounds as last year. These were very kindly lent by Messrs. Brown and White, and were ideal, being central and providing

plenty of space and shade. In arranging the sports programme it was decided to endeavour to cater for all sections of the community and to attain this objective a further meeting is to be held on Monday evening, at which the younger men of the district! will be present, and will draw up an attractive programme of events.

The school reopened with a roll number of 95—a record for the commencement of any year in the school’s history. The Pairere settlers, especially at the Hinuera end of the district, have been for some time anxious that their senior children should be enabled to attend the Matamata Junior High School, and thus enjoy the advantages of the larger community life which that institution provides. So far the endeavours to arrange for bus conveyance have been unavailing and the enterprising parents are to be admired who are in the meantime taking turns at driving the pupils in their own cars to join the High School bus at Hinuera. At the same time primary pupils are left at Hinu- ! era school, thus saving the little ones | the long walk to Pairere school. Painful Accident. When Stanley Dawson, a boy five years of age, was bathing in a creek on his father’s farm he jumped on to some timber in the stream. The injury was evidently more severe than was at first believed, for a subsequent examination of the foot proved that the hone had been injured, and that several pieces of wood had to be removed under an anaesthetic.
