PAENGAROA BLOCK.
ACCESS WANTED. For Settlement. The Matamata County Council received a further letter at Friday’s meeting from Messrs. Gannon and Co. Ltd. with reference to roading their Paengaroa block. The letter .stated that after searching the map they found the road mentioned by the council was not a direct road to their block but was in Rotorua county and passed ovet an almost impossible swamp. In suggesting the train line as a road they considered it was the best means of opening up the country as it missed the swamp. Many thousands of acres did not belong to the company. The letter urged that the county was getting the rates from the block and if later it was cut into small farms it would take a lot of roadmaldng on their property to give access. In ~view of this they did not think it
was just they should Jjo asked to make a road from their block to the Oxford road. Tauranga county was prepared to make the road at their end and this would be the only outlet. It seemed hardly fair that the opening up and settling of the block should be done by Tauranga and Matamata receive the benefits without spending a penny on. the roads. Or. Cox stated tliaL if the settlers were going to go out that way the solution was for that piece of land to be transferred to the Tauranga County Council. Cr. Allen thought that as the company had been big ratepayers for years the council should see what it could do to assist in the matter. Cr. Judd said that the road which was stated to be formed was all bumpy, rising abruptly for 18 in 1 places and then dropping a couple of j feet. Cn the motion of Crs. Anderson and Cox the matter was left in the hands of the riding member (Cr. Allen) and the engineer to submit a report for the next meeting.
