Waotu.

A small dance was held in the Waotu hall on Saturday evening. Despite the fact that the dance was only decided on during the day in the harvest field, there • was a good attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent, in spite of the fact of the labours of harvesting during the heat of the day. Excellent music was supplied by volunteers. A rather amusing experience befel an enterprising salesman who had spent considerable time in running a prospective customera farmer—to earth. The businessman concerned specialised in the commodity popularly known as “ hard stuff,” and having finally convinced the settler that an order would be to his benefit, he found to his dismay that much precious time had been lost and that he should have teen much further on the road than he was. Anxiously he awaited the cheque to seal the order, and after much hunting the cheque book was finally located in a cupboard. Then followed a further hunt for a pen. .More time was wasted until finally the hustle-salesman grabbed a barely dry cheque and dashed away with loud and profuse thanks. Arrived at his destination, many miles away, the purveyor of “ hard stuff ” no doubt felt there was much truth in the old adage “less haste more speed,” when he found that his precious cheque contained no signature. Good progress has been made with the roading of the Henley estate on the shores of Lake Arapuni and the circular road is well under way. Half of the enclosed circle is to be used for the hostel and the other half for a public green. The road direct to the river bank has also been started.
