CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

FEBRUARY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday, Mr. J. P. Benton presiding. Parliamentary Tour. It was explained that owing to attempt having been made by the United Party organiser to arrange a party tour, some confusion had arisen with regard to the Parliamentary

visit to Putaruru. However, the date had now been fixed for February 14 and 15, and invitations had been sent to all the Auckland city members, and also to Messrs. Lye, Young, Hall, Samuel, Lee Martin and Massey. At the request of the Minister for Lands and for other obvious reasons, it had been found necessary to separate the visit of the members from that of the Ministerial party. The secretary then read replies from Messrs. Mason, Young and Harris accepting the invitation, and from Messrs. Fletcher, Massey and Savage, declining on account of previous engagements. The former stated that he would take an opportunity of visiting the district at s. later date. The secretary explained that only four days had elapsed since the invitations had been sent out, and in consequence it was too early to expect all the replies. On the motion of Messrs. Griffiths and Neal it was decided that a meeting of the executive and any others interested be called at a later date to fix the final itinerary for the tour of the district. ,

The Taupo Timber Company wrote, with reference to the visit, that, if desired, a special train to Mokai would be run and that they would contribute a fair proportion towards the expenses. Mr. Griffiths explained that he had approached the county council on this matter, and that council would bear their share of the expense in the same manner as they had done for- the Wellington trip. A letter from the Putaruru Town Board was also read stating that it would contribute towards thee expenses of the visit of members of Parliament. Telephone Exchange. The acting-postmaster replied thanking the chamber for its letter of appreciation in regard to the telephone exchange and advising that the operator concerned had been acquainted with the contents of the chamber’s letter.
