PUTARURU v. MAMAKU. The above game was played at futamru and ended in a win for the home team by five wickets. It was anybody’s game throughout, the sides being very evenly matched, and had the visiting skipper persisted with his opening bowlers, especially Reed, in the first innings, victory might have been their’s. Putaruru started very badly in their reply to Mamaku’s 88, losing four wickets for seven runs. Patterson and Macown then became associated and by picking the balls to hit, gradually wore down the bowling and raised the total- to 41 'before they were separated. Patterson compiled 36 and executed? some pretty, shots, especially pn the leg side. His timing was good, and his strokes well placed. He lost his wicket by trying to force the pace, a good length ball which pitched just outside the, leg stump taking his middle peg. Macown, who rendered Patterson invaluable aid in the first innings, also came to light in the second venture, and by his steadiness against anything dangerous on the wicket ensured victory for his side. There were no fewer than eight “ sixers ” during the game, four being scored by erch side. The boundary, however, was a short one. Macown and Patterson shared the bowling honours for the home team, while Reed and Marsh were the best trundlers for the visitors. The winning hit was a six, scored quite appropriately by the home captain, Brown. Details of the score are as follows:
