PEKIN AN EMPTY CITY.
10,000 Families leave and 1000 SHOPS CLOSE.
A message from Pekin states that about 1000 mure shops closed in October, making more than 3500 since the removal of the capital to Nanking. Hundreds more desire to close, but the police refuse to suspend their licenses. More than 10,000 families have left Pekin, and the rents of houses have greatly fallen, bringing virtual ruin to many property holders. i
Owing toi poverty the number of robberies is largely decreasing. Drought is also causing the most serious conditions in the surounding provinces. Several hundred thousand people are stated to be starving, and banditls and the exactions of soldiers are making matters worse.
Winter is setting in earlier than usual and snow has already fallen. The Nationalists moved the seat of Government to Nanking, more than 500 miles south of Pekin, after gaining control of China last year. Pekin had been the capital, with shortl intervals, for about 950 years.
