TRAFFIC TALLIES.

MAMAKU AND TOKOROA. Reporting to the Matamata County Council at the January meeting, the engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald, submitted tallies of motor traffic over the Mamaku and Tokoroa roads as follow: “ Tallies of traffic between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. between December 22 and January 4 inclusive disclose that 3863 motor vehicles went over the Mamaku hill. This is an average of 276 per day. New Year’s Day was highest with 392. The increase over last year is about 40 per cent, and over the previous year about 400 per cent. A decrease in the number of service cars is recorded. Over the

Kaimai hill 816 motor vehicles were recorded, giving an average of 58 per day and an increase of 25 per cent, over last year. Service cars dropped from 12 to 6 per day, while other cars increased from 29 to 45. “ The highway through Tokoroa carried 1894, or a daily average of 135 motor vehicles, which is practically the same as last year, but the number of motor lorries increased from 10 to 17 per day. While these figures show a general increase of 20 per cent, over last year and 150 per cent, over the previous year I do not think they tell the whole story by reason of the fact that motor traffic is being distributed over a greater number of days in each year and not confining to the short holiday periods as it formerly did.”
