DEATH OF AN AMERICAN EVANGELIST. The death of Dr Reuben Archer Torrey, partner of the famous TorreyAlexander evangelist mission tk» Great Britain more than 20 years ago is announced in a message from New Yerk. Dr Torrey was bom at Hoboken, New Jersey, and was the son of an Inland Revenue collector. He made his public confeshsion as a Christian while studying at Yale University, and later came under the influence of Moody, who, in partnership with Sankey, had conducted a vigorous re- . ligious campaign in Great Britain in * the ’seventies. I In 1902 he jq|ined forces with Mr Charles Alexander to carry evangelism to Australia and New Zealand, India and the Far East. On January 9, 1903, they arrived in England. They opened their mission at the Albert Hall with a special choir of 3000 vonces, and after their London campaign toured the cig cities of the countlry. The largest buildings were unable to accommodate their followers. Mr Alexander’s contributions to the partnership were chiefly musicaL He ( conducted the huge choir at the Alj bert Hall and often led the singing, j The "Glory Song,” his best known composition, took whole Downs in England by storm. It was whistled in the streets by errand boys and played upon ba’-rel organs. It is estimated that it appeared m print 10,000,000 times in English and 15 other languages. The refrain was: j Oh, that will be I Glory for me, Glory for me, : Glory for me, When, by H!s grace, I shall look on I His face, That) will be glory, Be glory for me. : When Dr Torrey left for the United States late in 1905 he estimated | that with Mr Alexander he had secured 95,000 converts to Christianity. During their visit to BirminghanfT Mr Alexander became engaged to ' Miss Helen Cadbury, daughter of Mr Richard Cadbury, of cocoa and chocolate farme, and they were married in July, 1905.

Dr Torrey revisited England in 1911.
