To check “laddering 99 in silk stockings, eliminate the dirt, and freshen up the fabric like new, use potato water for washing. Many varieties of artificial silk are weakened by repeated applications ot soap and water. The excess moisture and the cLemieals in the soap P'*Y havoc with the fine threads, so that they bret*k and cause “ ladders ’ ’ at the mosz ii)w3 pertune moments. To make the potato water, pour a quart of clean water over half a pound of potatoes, stirring well all the time. Set aside until the potato pulp settles and pour off the clear waterIvnead the stockings lightly in this water, rinse in clean rain water, and hang out to dry in the ordinary way. If you wish to dry the stockings quickly, lay them between two thick nes -es of blotting paper. This will absorb the excess moisture better thuja drying before a fire, and the silk will ihh be shrunk unduly in any part so that it “ ladders'’ at the first oppor Lumty # No soap whatever is required.
