WOMEN MAYORS.
The British municipal year, /which began last month, saw another woman Lord Mayor, Alderman Mrs Crichton, of York. Mrs Crichton is the third woman to hold the office. The first, elected in 1924, was Miss Mary Column, of Norwich, and the second Miss Margaret Beavan, the present Lord Mayor of Liverpool. Fifteen years elapsed between the election of' the first woman mayor in the countrv, the late Mrs Garrett Anderson. and that of the first woman Lord Mayor. In the meantime the number of women mayors has been growing. The highest before last year was seven in 1924-25. Last year there
were fourteen. Great appreciation of tho work of the women mayors has been expressed by all pa-ties, and last year was made speciably notablo by the very interesting ccremonv in Liverpool at which Miss Beaven entertained her thirteen colleagues and took them on a tour of the docks and other places of interest. The first woman mayor in London was Mrs Salter, of Bermondsey. Mrs Draopcr. of Deptford, is the second. Norwich, the first city in England to appoint a woman Lord Mayor, has chosen Miss Mable Clarkson as its new sheriff.
