Racing.

Mateer’s Team. Each member of R. j. Mateer’s team at Matamata is looking a picture of health, although, nothing win be asked of them at the forthcoming Mlerslie meeting. Valroe, which won at both starts at Te Kuiti, was out in the paddock after the meeting, but is in solid work again and doing well. Valroe looks like staying on. The son of Valkyrian Will probably have his next start at Thames. There are three two-year-olds in Mateer’s string,-and'one or them particularly is worth --writing about This is the daughter of Valkyrian Irene Bruce (Robert, the Bruce . Zannie), which is built on very solid lines. : She is nearly as big as- her mother was as a racehorse, and is displaying ability on the Matamata track. On breeding and appearances distant races should be this youngster’s forte.

Valstreet (Valkyrian Queen Street) has had two starts, in one of which, at Te Rapa, he got third. He contracted a cold at tjie meeting, and this stopped a trip So Taranaki during the holidays. Valstreet will probably be reserved for the Matamata meeting in February. The owner of Fernden and Speardance (Mr. Jos. Pohlen) has two yooungsters with Mateer, a three-year-old, Spring Abbey (Quin Abbey —Wyoming) and Wee Prince (Prince Merriwee—Lady Rewa). Neither of these have raced, but they will probably get into the starter’s hands during the summer—perhaps at Te Aroha.

1 Mateer is to be congratulated on the condition of his team and on his patience. There will be something doing in the autumn. Carmont’s String. C. Carmont, senr., has received two additions to his team at Matamata, one being a full sister to Red Day (Day Comet—Ruby) and the other the hack, Atapai, formerly trained at Thames. Red Day’s sister is built on bigger lines than her relative, and has only just had her education commenced.

Furrie (Feramorz—Bon Rouge) was to have had its first start at Waipa, and was expected to run prominently. Carmont, however, received a telegram on the course to scratch the mare, owing to the death of the son of the owner, Mr. Donald Grant, which occurred at K opurf.h;. near Rotorua, on Friday. The racing Gold Rain has had lately has improved the St. Amans— Shdwer Gold gelding, but the hard tracks will be against him from now on. Gold Rain will have his next start at the Matamata non-tote meet- | ing and should run very forward. With the exception of a few scratches, Red Day suffered no harm froin her fall at the Waipa meeting, snd she continues to thrive in her work. Red Day is improving with each race, and should get on the winning list on the country circuit. The longer the distance the better for her.

Alarm, an erstwhile hurdle candidate from Gisborne, which was being got ready by C. Carmont, senr., has broken down and has been sent home to his owner, Mr. Tanner, at Waihi Alarm stands over 17 hands, and will he a most difficult horse to train. A fi/Ve-year-old gelding, Master Latour (General Latour—Lady Wauchope) i s coming to hand nicely, and be ready to show his paces in “ le ar<tuiTm - Master Latour is owned by Messrs. G. Casey and W. Groves, Si Morrinsville.

McArthur’s Charges. Leitrim and Star of the East disappointed Allan McArthur at Waipa. Highflown set too hot a pace for the chestnut, but there are plenty of races yet on the circuit for Star of the East.

Leitrim’s performance was too bad to he taken notice of, although it is quite_ possible the half brother to Dobbin has trained off.
