At the recent meeting of the British Association, Professor T. P. McIlwraith, of Toronto, the only white man to have been admitted to the Bella Coola, a native secret society in British Columbia, told of the secret rites which they practised. “ A supernatural power is felt by some of the members,” he said, “ and this sometimes makes them do extraordinary things.” In his case, it made him rush round madly biting his associates, who also used the power very vigorously, and some of the older members proudly exhibited scars upon their limbs made by the bites.
