PREPARING FOR TOURISTS.
HIGHWAYS MEMO. On Surfacemen’s Holidays. A memorandum received by the Matamata County Council at its meeting from the Highways Board stated that last year certain main highways which carried a great amount of traffic to holiday resorts became very unsatisfactory owing to the fact that controlling authorities gave their surfacing staffs holidays during the Christmas and New Year period. As the Main Highways Board provided two-thirds of cost of maintenance they were entitled to expect good surfaces, and in order to save cost of maintenance controlling authorities were advised not to release their surfacing staffs during the holidays, but to keep workers and graders constantly at work. The engineer reported that the county surfaceman were not given holidays at that period. In the old days it was the custom for the men to take, or be given, a fortnight or so, and for them to return when they were “ broke,” but now, though they could have a day or two, they were at work for the whole of the remaining period.
