A SPINSTER’S ADVICE.
MARRIAGE “ THE BEST THING.” “Do not remain an old spinster, like me. You get tired of it/ when you are getting on a bit, and you would like a man to, look after you.” This frank confession and advice was tendered by Miss Margaret Beavan, Lord Mayor of Liverpool, to 150 girl emigrants who left for Australia recently under the auspices of the Salvation Army. They are to take up domestic work.
“ You are all young, and in a few years will be married,” said Miss Beavan. “It is the best thing to do. Domestic workers are the builders of the home. It is not a poor service by any means. It is one of the highest orders in the land.”
The Cedric was specially chartered by the Salvation army for the occasion. It steamed down the Mersey under three flags—those of the Salvation Army, the Union Jack and the White Star.
