Motoring in 1901 was a pioneering experience in more ways than the mechanical. Mr. C. M. Banks, who imported one of the first motor cars in Wellington, telegraphed to Wanganui as to the prospects of getting petrol there. He was told that he might be able to get a little “ from a chemist.” As the lijtle tillersteered “ bus ” he then drove was not built to carry loads in excess of passengers'he sent a case of petrol up by the steamer Stormbird. Arrived in Wanganui, quite a feat in those days, he approached a livery stable proprietor for permission to house the car during the night but was told with some force to take it away as it would frighten every horse in the place. The present-day contrast was' shown on a recent visit, when, though there were plenty of garages, he found them all full. THgVT TIRED FEELING. Marshall’s Fospherine Needed.!
