MONTHLY MEETING. The December meeting of the Pu-,, I taruru Chamber of Commerce was i attended by Messrs. G. G. Griffiths, M. St. J. Paxton, C. C. Neal, C. G. * Alcorn, W_ Davis, A. Simpson and A. H. Dukeson (secretary). An apology for absence through illness was received from Mr. J. W. Barr Brown (president), Mr. Griffiths (vice-presi-dent) presiding in his stead. Grim melt’s Report. The late Minister of Agriculture (Mr. Hawken) advised that Mr. Grimmett’s report on local soil surveys had not yet been completed, but copies of the Journal of Agriculture, which contained references to the report, would be forwarded to the chamber.—Received.

Call Boxes. The district telegraph engineer, Auckland, wrote, in reply to a request from the chain'er for a public telephone booth, that ‘he experience of the department was I hat in centres of the size of Putaruru it was not a paying proposition to erect same. Members expressed astonishment at the tone-.pf and statements made in the letter and it was unanimously de-, cided, on the motion of Messrs. Simpson and Neal, to seek the co-operation of the Putaruru postmaster, and .to make a further application for ja. box near the station gates.'

Thanks. On the motion of Messrs. Neal and Alcorn it was decided to record the chamber's pleasure at the success of the effort to get reduced freights on the T.T.T. Company’s line and to thank the company for its assistance. Land and Houses. - Mr. Alcorn said'Sir Joseph Ward’s proposal to raise £60,000,000 presented a unique opportunity for those interested in providing land and houses for the people. Putaruru was losing residents because of a shortage of houses, and he proposed that the chamber’s congratulations be sent to Sir Joseph Ward on his election.
