TOO MUCH JAZZ.
FAILURE OF CANDIDATES. Power Board Chairman’s Comment. “ Too much jazzing and not enough study,” said Mr. F. Strange, chairman of the Thames Valley Power Board, during a discussion at Tuesday’s meeting on the failure of candidates from the Thames Valley district at the examination for wiremen. The engineer (Mr. N. G. McLeod) ; said that at first candidates from Thames ' Valley did very well, but there was now a great falling off. The boys were not prepared to give the time for study. The manager (Mr. R. Sprague): We are prepared to arrange classes. Mr. McLeod: After a license has been obtained a boy gets an increase in wages. Mr. Flatt: But we have to keep them for five years. The engineer said the boys started at 15s and received a 5s rise every six months. The manager: And they get 18s camp allowance weekly. Mr. Flatt: A boy can make more selling newspapers. The manager: The wages are fixed by award. Mr. Willy: How many apprentices have we now ? The manager said there were ten. The boys were chiefly at depots and any of the assistant engineers were (Continued In Next Column)
prepared to assist the boys in their studies. Those who had availed themselves of the assistance offered had passed the examination. Those boy's engaged by the board in the earlier days were now troublemen.
