DAIRY COMPANIES CONFER.

HINUERA AND TE AWAMUTU. A deputation of directors of Hinuera Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., consisting of Messrs. J. E. West (chairman), T. Corry, P. Hawke,, I. Black and S. A. Clarke, accompanied* by the factory manager (Mr. W. L., Hollis), paid a visit of inspection to Te Awamutu Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., last week. They were met by the .chairman of the Te Awamutu Company (Mr. Chas. M, Alexander) andMessrs W. F. Woodward and A. H. Trubshaw (directors).

A thorough inspection of the factory and plant was made by the visitors, after which a conference was held in the Te Awamutu Dairy Com- i pany’s office. Several matters of mu- I tual interest were fully discussed, and a helpful interchange of opinions took place. The question of whether the present system of cream grading could not be altered with benefit to the industry and to suppliers was dealt with. It was felt that the present method of GovernI ment supervision was satisfactory as l far as it went, but doubts were exi pressed as to whether it was comi plete enough to ensure absolute uni- ■ formity of cream grading amongst factories operating in the same area.

The secretary of Te Awamutu Dairy Company (Mr. A. J. Sinclair) was asked to get in touch with a number of other dairy companies to ascertain their views on this subject. During the conference several ■ speakers stressed the benefits of I closer co-operation amongst the small co-operative dairy companies dperatI ing in South Auckland province. It (was suggested that a scheme could be f evolved under which dairy companies, ] without losing their individuality, and with no thought of amalgamation, could nevertheless take united action on matters affecting their common welfare, including the joint purchase of manufacturing requisites in bulk quantities, the purchase of manures, f.o.b. selling, herd-testing, cream grading, etc. It was decided that this matter should be fully discussed on the first occasion when a conference of dairy companies’ directors was convened.

On behalf of the Hinuera delegation, Mr. J. E. West expressed appreciation of the information supplied by the Te Awamutu company, whose rapid growth was being followed with interest. Mr. Chas. M. Alexander suitably replied on behalf of his company.
