DRIVING ON HILLS.
CROSSING ON THE BROW. Likelihood of Collisions. (By Motus), When driving on hills one should never try to pass another vehicle while ascending to the brow of a rise. About a month ago I had a most unpleasant experience in this respect. I was just reaching the top of an incline, when another car from the opposite direction came to the toy from the other side of the hill at the same time. For the two of us to pass was quite a simple matter, and as each was keeping to his proper side of the road the fact that we did not see each other until we came almost abreast did not cause much concern. . But behind the approaching car, a second one, a big powerful tourer, tried to pass also, so that there were three cars endeavouring to negotiate on the apex. I jammed on my four-wheel brakes and brought my car to a standstill. The first car from the opposite direction accelerated and shot forward, enabling the following vehicle to swing in behind again in the nick of time, otherwise there must have been a collision. The driver of the third car grinned broadly as he passed me, showing that he was one of those irresponsibles who are not fit to be in charge of a carat least not on the Cambridge-Mata-mata hills. as is the case in England, whereby such persons may be reported to the authorities, and be sent an official warning, and the incident listed against him in case of further offences.
