FRANKLY, it is hard to understand the continued opposition to tidyingup the sides of streets affected by the loan.. Previously, before the roads were finished, there may have been some good excuse, but now that this work is all but completed, it should be easy to visualise the effect of preparing same for beautifying. In regard to finance, the total estimates for loan works amounted to £7325 and this amount was increased by £175 to >» bring it up to round figures of £7500. Further, ten per cent was, as is usual, allowed for contingencies. These two amounts, which have not yet been drawn upon, are for such works which are not quite apparent when estimates are being drawn up. The only further point then is to consider the value received for the expenditure incurred, and as the price quoted, £22, covers some six acres Of road-side, and includes stumping, felling and burning scrub, ploughing and discing, there should be no ground for complaint on this score. The factor that if the work is done now before all the crossings are put in will reduce the cost .considerably has also to be borne in mind.
When everything is considered, including the aesthetical and business value attaching to neat and tidy road sides, and that as a member stated the cost was but £2O spread over 20 years, there seems to be no justification for any further' opposition, if the best interests of the town as a whole are. to be viewed in a broad manner.
