LAKE-SIDE CAMPS.

SPOILED BY NOISES. Lake Arapuni Trouble. Mr. J. T. Holdcroft, of Aiapuni, replied to the Matamaua County Council’s demand that he should remove a pipe line from the Waotu road at Arapuni, stating that he had permission from the Public Works Department to lay same. A copy of the letter giving permission was enclosed, and the writer asked for a reconsideration of the matter.

The letter from the Public Works Department approved of the erection of a hydraulic ram on the Arapuni Lake frontage on condition that a formal easement costing £3 3s was prepared, and an annual payment of 10s in advance made.

A further letter from Mr. T. Rabone, district engineer, at Arapuni, dated September 21, stated there appeared to be some misunderstanding on the matter. Mr. Holdcroft had called on him that day with reference to a ram that he proposed to install on the lake-side reserve. His application had been favourably considered, and the Minister’s approval obtained, and a deed of easement was being prepared. As the Department had given permission, it was considered reasonable the council should allow Mr. Holdcroft the same privileges as those extended to other settlers.

I Cr. Darby: He says “proposes to . j put in ” and the thing has been in for ! two or three weeks. Mr. Rabone’s letter does not give the position at I all. Continuing, Cr. Darby stated that Mr. Bold was the officer concerned, j Mr. Holdcroft was told that he must j get the council’s permission. The council had to consider the general j welfare, and the ram would be a j source of annoyance to every fisherman camped in the vicinity. It made property near about valueless, owing to the big noise it made, the sound / being magnified over the water. ! Cr. Allen thought they should not [ block a man who -wanted water for j liis farm. Cr. Darby stated h n could get water elsewhere, while the ram spoiled a l beautiful waterfall. He suggested the works committee 'dew the spot before taking any action and satisfy themselves. The chairman: That is the fairest way. Cr. Dee seconded this motion, which was carried unanimously.
