MOTOR WAGGON ROADS.

The attention of the Matamata County Council was drawn by Mr. A. H. Dukeson, sen., at the October meeting, to. the almost impassable state of the back Lichfield road. The writer stated that the cream carter protested against using the road owing to its state, and settlers desired to be in the position of getting to and from their farms in the winter months. He asked that the road from Allen’s gate to Cunningham’s—a distance of about li miles—be sanded and graded. Cr. Darby: It would cost about

£I3OO to metal and the whole of the rates only amount to £BOO. Cr. Wilson: He only wants sand. Cr. Darby: That would cost nearly as much as there is no sand handy. The engineer stated that it was arranged for part of the work to be done this year and part next. It was agreed to notify Mr. Dukeson that part of the work would be carried out this summer, but that there was no intention of doing all that was asked for. The engineer: The estimate for the road was £BOO, towards which £2OO would come from roading funds and £2OO subsidy. If settlers came to light with their promises it would help. Cr. Darby: The trouble is they have jumped from horse drawn waggons to heavy motor lorries, and it can’t be done on the rates. I don’t suppose they would go for a special rating area. It was decided to reply in terms of a previous resolution.
