PUTARURU LOAN WORKS.
PROGRESS REPORT. The following report on local loan works was submitted by the resident engineer, Mr. E. Carr, at the last meeting of the Putaruru Town Board:— “ Considering the weather experienced during the past month, work on the present contract has progressed very satisfactorily. “ McKenzie street has now been metalled and rolled and now requires only the shingle and a little earthwork to complete. At the Kensington street end several loads of very poor metal have been put in. This metal consists mostly of powder and chips, which collect at the bottom of every stack in the quarry as a result of trapping. This patch has been condemned, and will receive another coat of metal. At this place there is also a short piece of footpath required to connect up with the metalled portion of the road. “ Buckland road has now been metalled right through. Most of this has been rolled and a length of six chains at the northern end has been gravelled. A little of the metal just put on at the Main street end is lumpy and requires more knapping. This metal requires a small amount of earthwork and the shingle to be completed. “ Arapuni road and Overdale road footpaths have' been shingled throughout.
Carberry avenue had to be abandoned through wet weather, when it required only two days to run the grade through to Overdale road and so do away with the usual lake at the junction. As the floor of the cutting in Carberry avenue consists of a soft puggy clay, which cuts up badly and dries slowly, it will be advisable to again erect barriers in the event of wet weather. Some of the surplus spoil from Carberry avenue is being used to widen the formation on Overdale road.
“ Earthwork is almost complete in Henderson street, which is now being shaped up. The metal has been put cn and rolled. “ Duke street is well advanced in earthwork. A temporary wooden box culvert has had to be laid to carry the water until the earthwork is far enough advanced for the concrete to be put in. The box culvert will be dug up and* will be available for private entrances, etc. “In Barnett street the numerous mud-holes have been scraped out and refilled with dry earth. This has (Continued In Next Column)
been rolled and is ready for the metal. Scotia Glen road has been raised, where subsidence had taken place, rolled and metalled. “ The completion of work in the present contract is in sight, and before the next meeting of the board there will be a lot of smoothing up done, including cleaning out of watertables and gravelling of private entrances, therefore any further work such as ploughing on the sides would fill up the water-tables again and make the work generally untidy. For this reason the board should decide at this meeting if the price of £22 for clearing, ploughing and discing side of Buckland road, Marchant street, Margaret street and McKenzie street should be reconsidered.”
