LOCAL AND GENERAL.
In the report of the Putaruru Police Court in our last issue, Mr. Burton’s name was inadvertently substituted for Mr. J. S. Reid, LL.B., in the case of Miss A. Gibbs v. E. J. , Darby and Matarnata County Council ' v. C. A. Bon'd. I The vital statistics for Putaruru for the September quarter of chis year and last year are as foil j-vs, ! last year’s figures appearing in parentheses: —Births 15 (23), deaths 1 ; (1), marriages 4* (0). ’“lncluding one by the registrar.
Some idea of the traffic in labbit skins may be gleaned from the fact that a member of one firm which operates in the Putaruru district advises a representative of this paper that his company alone had bought 250,000 skins between Putaruru and Frankton during the past season. Several Matarnata anglers have had a certain amount of success with the rod on the Waihou, in the Tirau and Okoroire stretches of the river. Mr. -J. Barford seems to have been one of the most successful, having secured ten trout during a day’s fishing. Mr. E. Edwards secured a fourpounder trout and a number were hooked by Messrs. C. Green, N. Pryce, J. B. Knyvett (six trout), J. Kronacher and others. There will be prizes for the best three-minute ghost story at the Hallowe’en dance, Putaruru, October 26.* i The 106th anniversary of the Methodist Maori Mission will be commemorated locally on October 25 in , the Town Hall, when a most unique and fascinating programme of music, song and oratory will be given by the official 1928 Maori Mission Party. The party is composed of representatives of some of the greater tribes to which the Methodist Maori Mission brought the Gospel so long ago and still guides in spiritual matters. A brief speech will be given on “ The Romance and Tragedy of Maori Missions,” and 17 items of highlyeduc'acive and entertaining quality will be rendered by the singers and musicians. The party will appear in Maori costume.*
