A curious instance ,of an association of idea was furnished at a country school near Wanganui the other day (relates the Chronicle). The youngest children had been taught to distinguish stratus clouds under the names of sheet clouds, this being easier to remember and equally descriptive. The other day, however, the teacher pointed to some clouds and asked what kind they were. Up shot the hand of one pupil, and the reply came, “ Please, teacher, quilt clouds.” As an indication of the mildness of the Taranaki winter it has been pointed out by farmers of long residence on the Ngaere swamp, near Eltham, that this year, for the first time,' the drains have not been sufficiently full to carry away the weeds thrown in when blearing was done - i-'er in the year. It was not until Lhe- heavy rain commenced at the beginning of the week that the drains assumed their normal winter appearance. In some parts it has been necessary to continue pumping water for stock, the streams not running ! high enough for the purpose.
