FALLOW DEER HERDS.
( ON MAUNGAKAWA. Matamata Favours Old Season. Consideration of the best policy to follow in regard to a fallow deer season as applied to Maungakawa area was given at the annual meeting of the Matamata branch of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society on Friday night, the president, Mr. W. Livingstone, being in the chair. The following letter was read from the parent body: “ In order to fix the regulations for next year’s fallow deer season, the council would be glad if you would forward a report on the fallow deer herds at Maungakawa, Cambridge and Karapiro. The Te Aroha people want the first herd thiown open from January 1 to December 31, with a license fee of £l. They say that the herd is deteriorating and not worth shooting.” Mr. C. Green (secretary) commented that there were some good heads in the Maungakawa area. He thought the system should go back to the old method whereby the season lasted two and a-half months, and the license fee £l.
Mr. T. E. McMillan considered that it would be well for members to favour a modification of the Te Aroha proposal, and get some shooting; otherwise the fellows without licenses would exterminate the lot.
Mr. Livingstone was of a similar opinion, after having given the subject a good deal of thought from every angle. Mr. Green’s proposal was adopted, the period to be from March 15 to the end of May, four heads, stags only, eight pointers and over. The members were opposed to an “ open slather ” as provided by Te Aroha, as they did not want the deer wiped out altogether in the Maungakawa district.
