THE UNITED PARTY.
THE selection of Sir Joseph Ward as leader of the United Party smacks rather of expediency. The other aspirants for the position were all members of the National Party, and to have, replaced the present leader by one of the rank and file might have led to friction. Sir Joseph Ward was not a member of the Nationalists. He remained loyal to the name which was associated with the zenith of his political career. Sir Joseph Ward is too old to be expected to take up the active leadership of the party. He will assist in counsel and in control of its meiribferg, but the actual hard fighting will fall upon others. In a political sense it was a shrewd move of the United Party. Its value was rather on the lines of avoiding a split during the infancy of the party than in selecting a new leader who would mould the political destiny of the United Party.
