MATAMATA COUNTY WORKS.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. Activities in the Ridings. Kaimai and Peria: All Metal Routes. The Matamata county engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald, reported as follows to his council on Friday, at Tirau:— “ A good deal of local crushed metal has been carted on to the main highways and other roads at Te Poi for maintenance. The new length of Banks’ road has been sand_d. Sanding of Lewis’ road is in hand. The bad lengths of Totman’s road have been surfaced with local material. Two bad patches on Tomalin’s road are being surfaced with rhyo-

lite. “ The portion of the old Taupo road south of Tokoroa which got into very bad order during the winter has ' been graded into fair condition. Most of the roads in the Tokoroa area have had considerable attention paid to them. “ The western end of Feria main road was metalled last month, and this marks an important stage in the reading of Peria riding, as there is now an all-metal route on the round trip via Peria and Station roads, over which considerable cream carting takes place. By about the end of this week the Public Works Department will link up the Kaimai metal at the foot of the hill; a work which closes the last gap in the metal between Matamata and Tauranga. “ Ross and Appleby are still engaged spawling rock at Maungatautari and Whitehall, respectively. A de-

tailed reconnaissance of Maungatautari riding is being carried out, with a view to locating further metal supplies. “ Settlers at the eastern end of Buckland road have been supplied with estimates in connection with with their proposals for metalling, and they now have the matter under consideration. “ An amicable arrangement Was come to in connection with the Outlet of the Leslie road culvert and the bad portion of the road at this spot is now in good order. “ The owner of property on the south side of Tomalin road wishes to

fence his land. This will necessitate the moving of the present road formation which is outside the area of dedicated roadway. “ Preliminary estimates in connection with works on Putaruru-Lich-field and on the portion of Puketu-rua-Ura Ura road, known as Bathe’s flat, show that as both works will probably have to be extended over two financial years it will be necessary for the council to decide the extent of the works and then pass the formal resolution re subsequent maintenance as required by the Public Works Department. “ The rebuilding of Mangamahu bridge was completed and a wing of the Oraka bridge on Waiomou main road, which collapsed, was rebuilt. The Oraka stream has made a further encroachment towards the Highway just south of Tirau and protective works are now in hand. “ The preliminary plans for deviating a portion of McKinnon’s road have been submitted to users of the road as well as to owners affected by the proposal, and, all having signified - approval, the preparation of the detailed survey has been put in hand. “ One steam roller has been at work on Peria road and in Matamata : town area. The trucks and graders have been engaged on the foregoing works and general maintenance in all ! parts of the county. The horse teams continued the building up of shouldf ers on the main highway north of t Tirau.”
