Mokai.
Fatal Accident. A very sad fatality occurred at Mokai on Tuesday, August 28, when Gladys Watt, aged 2, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Watt, of Mokai, jjyas killed accidentally. Apparently the little girl was playing near the house, and her mother, not hearing her for some minutes, went out to look for her and found her lying under a heavy piece of timber which had been leaning against the fence. Apparently by some means the timber had been tipped over on top of (<§the child, killing her instantly. The circumstances were immediately reported to the police, who later advised the parents that as the little girl obviously met her death by accident an inquest would not be necessary, and the District Nurse (Miss Wood) was able to certify to the cause of death.'
The body was taken per T.T.T. train to Putaruru on Friday, August 31, and interred beside that of her late uncle, Mr. E. A. Watt, who was accidentally killed in the Mokai bush last January. Much sympathy is extended to the sorrowing parents. Death. Another death which caused much V sadness occurred at Waiuku on Friday, August 17, when Mrs. Hurrell, wife of Mr. J. Hurrell (late manager of the Mokai Stores, Ltd,), died very suddenly. The deceased lady was very widely known and held in high esteem about this district, where she bad resided for some 13 years. Although she had been in indifferent health for some time prior to her death, the end came with unexpected suddenness. She is survived by her husband and four sons, to whdm f much sympathy is extended in their sad bereavement. Football. The Taupo Sub-union competition, in which five teams were competing, has been upset somewhat by the breaking up of the N.Z.P.F., Ltd., camps, and the consequent departure of a large number of players. A representative game, played at Taupo on Saturday, August 25, against a team from Hawke’s Bay, was won by Taupo by 10 points to. 5. Social.
A social evening, which took the form of a linen evening and dance, was recently held in honour of Miss L. Gamble (eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Gamble), who is shortly to be married to Mr. C. C. Barnes, also of Mokai. The young people were the recipients of many useful presents, as well as the best wishes of their many friends in Mokai. After their marriage, which is to take place in Mokai on Thursday, September 6, the young couple intend leaving for Sydney, where their future home will be. Both will be much missed among the various sports bodies here—Mr. Barnes being a prominent member of the Golf, Tennis and Football clubs, while Miss Gamble, besides being a representative tennis player for the Waikato East team, is lady champion of the Mokai Golf Club.
