Non-skid Streets.

COMPOSITION RAISES HOPES. Trying to find the ideal road paving—a non-skid surface that is cheap and durable—French engineers have tried nearly everything on test roads without discovering exactly what they want. Hopes of success have again been roused by a new artificial stone which is being tested at Nice. These yellowish composition stones, which measure 9 inches by 45 inches by 3 inches, are laid diagonally like cobbled stones, but their points are cemented by a tar mixture. The life of this pavement is estimated at 35 years, and experiments have shown that the artificial blocks are more durable than cobble stones, and, above all, wear down withouc becoming slippery. The cost in France is about eight shillings a square yard.
