HAMILTON 17, MATAMATA 14. Although neither of the teams fielded was anything like up to the representative standard of these subunions, the game at Hamilton-, on Saturday was bright from start to finsh. It was open play on both sides and fortunes fluctuated throughout so that excitement was maintained until the bell. Matamata missed weight in the forwards and were beaten for the ball in at least seventy per cent of the set scrums. This meant that the backs were mostly on the defensive. They carried out their work so well that generally they frus- • trated the up-ball game of their opponents. The Matamata forwards did not go well.
MORRINSVILLE 18, CAMBRIDGE 11. Morrinsville defeated Cambridge on Saturday by 18 points to 11 in a very poor display of football. The Morrinsville team were/ without a number of the winning Peace Cup team. The forwards were evenly matched. Neither set of backs was impressive, the Morrinsville division handling poorly. Morrinsville were quicker to take advantage of openings than their opponents. Tries were scored for Morrinsville by A. Cameron, Robson, Campbell and Howard, G. Marshall converting three. W. Bourke and Shaw scored for Cambridge, W. Bourke converting one try and kicking a penalty goal. PEACE CUP DATES. Alteration in Fixtures. At a meeting of the Morrinsville Rugby Union on Saturday evening the dates of the Peace Cup challenges were reconsidered and were altered as follow: Matamata.—August 25. Thames.—September 8. Franklin.—September 12 or 19. Paeroa.—September 29.
The alterations were made necessary by the Waikato representative engagements, which fall on Sepfem-; her 1, 15 and 22. ' 1 . ' . • rjj * r £ =** INTER-ISLAND MATCH; The Christchurch Press, writing on the North-South Islands match, Says : At the last minute R: Kemp ..went in at centre for North in -place, of L. Minns, a change with doubtful justification in view of his appalling incompetency at handling, equalled on Saturday only by Oliver. It is not surprising to see that L. Hook has been entrusted with the position of centre in -the New- Zealand side in view of the showing by the two centres on Saturday. Anderson should he placed next to Snodgrass in order of merit as far as the inter-island game is concerned, the Wanganui man on the other wing for North, Carlson, suffering in any comparison through poor handling and positional play. THE TEST. It now only remains for the All Blacks to make a draw of the Tests, and that will present a most difficult itask. Saturday’s match appears, from the
reports, to have been a much more cpen game than the two -previous matches. Hitherto potted .and penalty goals figured mainly in the scores, but in this match the scores were comprised of tries. On the play South Africa deserved their win in a hard fought game. Evidently a great controversy is proceeding in South Africa over the omission of Mark Nicholls from the All Black Test sides. It is quite out of the question at this distance to pass any opinion. It is well known here that Nicholls is rather weak on defence. On the other hand he is subtle in attack, and as far as strategy and tactics are concerned is superior to any of the other inside backs.
SATURDAY’S RESULTS. Inter-Island. South 15, North 14. Sub-uniun. Hamilton 17, Matamata 14. Morrinsville 18, Cambridge 11. Binnie Cup. Hamilton City 29, Te Awamutu Rovers 3. Junior Representatives.
