LONGEVITY IN NORWAY.

A golden -wedding with a bridegroom of some historic interest was celebrated in the small town of Risor, on the south - coast of Norway. The bridegroom was Mr Martin Bjorndalen, a brother of one of the men who fought on board the Norwegian frigate Najaden against the British man-of-war Dictator on 6th July, 1812, when the first ship was sunk in the battle at Lyngoer. Martin Bjorndalen, who is 83 years old, was the youngest of 24 in three marriages, and his "brother, Torje Bjorndalen, who was

on board the Nadajen, was the eldest. The father then married his third wife when 84 years oli, and died at the age of 104 years. Martin Bjorndalen runs a small farm which he inherited from his father, and during 150 years the farm has had only two owners, Thor and Martin. The Bjorndalen family has a tradition of imperturbality as well as longevity. When, during the battle at Lyngoer, the Najalen lost its rigging, Torje was knocked overboard. With the bullets plunging around him he still managed to take advantage of the situation to cut out pieces of the sails for a coat and trousers for himself before he swam ashore
