“PLUS FOURS.”
It may be that before this winter is over we will see the foundation of a fashion which will enhance (the comfort of men. There is semi-humor-ous discussion of the plus fours worn as ordinary garb by some of the English footballers. New Zealanders who have travelled do not notice the attire. They have met it in England and Scotland and among British travellers on the Continent. Golfers of late years have generally adopted it. The English footballers have had to explain why they wear these knicker suits and naturally they mention comfort. Cyclists of the days of what is known now as the “push bike” recall the comfort of the knicker suits worn for that recreation, and agree that if plus fours became everyday wear in the city physical strain would be reduced. It was suggested some time ago that knicker suits for railway employees on stations would be a far more sensible uniform than the trousers now worn. “Trousers” said one who had considered the matter, “ impose additional muscle strain every time a man stoops—slight, perhaps, but during a full day of some importance. On thousands of uniforms there would be a useful reduction in cost.”
