“THE WRONG TASK.”

MOTOR REGULATIONS. Protest Not Supported. The Matamata County Council at its last meeting received a request from the Waipa County Council asking for support to a protest against the action of the Government in restricting the powers of county councils in framing by-laws to restrict the speed of motor vehicles, and also asking that representation be made urging an amendment to the Public W orks Act to enable local authorities to enact by-laws restricting the speed of all motor vehicles.

The engineer stated the Waipa County Council seemed to be under a wrong impression. The regulations did not over-ride by-laws—it was the other way about. Waipa stated they had had legal opinion, but there was some mistake somewhere. The chairman suggested that the council reply that if Waipa. considered they had a grievance they could forward a remit to the Counties’ Conference. Cr. Darby: I think we should point out that we think they are on the wrong tack. This Was agreed to, and a resolution, in the names of Crs. Anderson and Darby, embodying these suggestions, was passed unanimously.
