MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL

JULY MEETING. ) The ordinary monthly meeting of 'the Matamata County Council was held at Tirau on Friday, when the following councillors were present : Messrs. W. H. Allen (Okoroire), P. Dee (Te Poi), S. H. Judd (Maungatautari), H. Eollett (Peria), J. Bruce *(Karapiro), W. S. Wilson (Matamata), E. J. Darby (Putaruru) and K. S. Cox (Tokoroa). In the absence of Cr. J. W. Anderson (Tirau), who was indisposed, Cr. S. H. Judd was elected to the chair. Maungatautari Reserve. The Department of Lands and Survey wrote enclosing copies of a Gazette notice vesting the Maungatautari scenic reserve in the council for a .period of five years.—Received.

Ranger for Reserve. The Waipa County Council advised that it had not been able to find anyone willing to act as ranger for the Maungatautari scenic reserve. On the motion of' Crs. Darby and Allen it was left with Cr. Judd to "try and obtain a suitable settler, or person, to act as ranger. Painting a Bridge. The Cambridge Borough Council advised that the work on the highlevel bridge at Cambridge had been -carried out by day labour. The Public Works Department had stipulated that where rust showed the steel had to be chipped and red lead applied before it was tarred. This resulted in heavy work. Cr. Cox pointed out that such a job ■ could not be let easily by contract. The chairman agreed that the reply was a satisfactory one under the circumstances. “A Verbal Arrangement.” The Public Works Department {Arapuni) advised that a verbal arrangement had been made with Mr. J. Shine five years ago that he was --have the use of trees felled, when the Arapuni road was put through, for fencing posts and firewood. So far as the department was concerned the privilege was intended to apply only to the period of construction of the road and could not possibly be

-interpreted to extend over a period five years. On the motion of Crs. Darby and Judd it was decided to forward a copy of the letter to Mr. Shine. by Public Works Department.. -The lion. W. Nosworthy, for the Minister of Public Works, wrote that when he was next in the district he would be pleased to meet a deputation from the council on the subject of carting materials for the department over county roads.—Received. /?"' Arapuni Subdivision. Mr. E. F. Halse, surveyor, Putaruru, forwarded for the council’s approval a plan of Mr. Lawcock’s subdivision bordering Lake Arapuni. The subdivision was approved with the proviso that before* Any further cutting up of the same area be sanctioned reserves must be indicated. W.E.A. I The council decided. to donate the sum of £5 towards the Workers’ Educational Association (Waikato centre). Banks’ Road. Mr. Banks wrote:—- “ Something further requires to be tdone with regard to the road running through my place. About £IOO is collected annually by your council from the farms on this road, and, while I -congratulate the council and its engineer on the good work they are doing on the main roads, I think at ■ some attention should be given . to the backblocks.

“ When I interviewed the council jsome six months ago about this road the matter was left in the- hands of ■the riding member and the engineer to deal with, and I suppose it is want of funds that is the trouble. Enclosed herewith is a cheque for £SO, being advance payment for my rates for the forthcoming year.” again the matter was left to the riding member and the engineer, after the latter had explained the history of the negotiations,; but with the proviso that the council would do the work if Mr. Banks paidihalf the cost, the full cost being about £SO. “ Quid Pro Quo.” Cr. Dee reported in regard to the road about which Mr. C. the works committee were approved : Karapiro Deviation, Richards and Dowling.—That the contractor’s letter be favourably considered. Milk Carting, Waharoa, New Zealand Dairy Company.—That a further £IOO be required of the New Zealand Dairy Company in respect of cartage up to March 31 under the arrangement entered into in October last, and a further £2OO for the current year if heavy lorries are to be used. Surfaceman’s House, Te Poi. —That the Lands Department’s offer of this property for £4OO he accepted and the engineer be authorised to put the house in order.
