HOSPITAL LEVY.
A PALMERSTON REQUEST. The Palmerston Borough Council suggested in a letter to the Matamata County Council that representations be made to the Government with a view to obtaining direct representation by county councils and borough councils on hospital boards. The chairman stated local bodies had direct representation, but the trouble was that sometimes that borough councils were lumped together under one representative. Cr. Cox stated that it appeared that what was wanted was for- borough councils and county councils to appoint their own representatives. The clerk thought it would make the hospital board too unwwieldly. The chairman: Yes; it would mean about 50 members for the Waikato. On the motion of Crs. Cox and Rollett, it was decided to reply that the council was in full sympathy with the idea, but that without fuller details in regard to method of election, hospital boards would become too unwieldly under the system proposed. It was generally agreed by members that some alteration in the management was necessary as the cost per bed was rising in an alarming manner.
