HOSPITALS MAINTENANCE.

INCREASING THE LEVIES. No Action in Morrinsville. That no action be taken was the recommendation of the finance committee to the Morrinsville Borough Council when reporting on Thursday evening on a letter from the Palmerston North Borough Council urging concerted action on jthe part of all local bodies contributing towards the upkeep of public hospitals with the object of having the system revised.

Cr. Reason said the committee had no quarrel with the present board and was satisfied with the management, responded recently to an appeal for charitable aid was very satisfactory. Cr. Chapman opposed the motion, expressing the opinion that the council should approve meeting the Government on the question. Local "bodies everywhere were dissatisfied ■with the high cost of administration. The Mayor said that while not altogether agreeing with Cr. Reason’s remarks, he would not oppose the motion. The position would be more equitable if an amendment were made in the system. A good deal of

opposition came from county councils, who complained of their high levy in comparison with borough councils. However, he would not like to see a complete change in the present system, as it might result in boroughs being asked to contribute more than they did now. The motion was carried, with Cr. Chapman dissenting.
